Butterfield Gives Great Value for Money Dear Editor:
I applaud the recent decision of the court to ensure that the Butterfield Library may receive the funds which our citizens voted to give it. I regret exceedingly, not only that the library was put to the expense of seeking the court's assistance, but also that we, as taxpayers, may be asked to fund (in addition to the meritless attempt to avoid compliance with the people's vote) a future appeal. I devoutly request that the Town Board members demonstrate that they are willing, if only after a struggle, to comply with the law.
Please let me pass along some advice to those who may be concerned about the impact on each of us, as taxpayers, that paying the total amount may have. Get a free library card. Borrow one brand-new hardcover best seller, or read a few brand-new popular magazines in the air-conditioned comfort of the library lounge. You have already broken even.
In addition, you are, like all of Butterfield's patrons, entitled to free computer access (either in the library or in your own home) to a wide variety of resource tools and to free downloads of audiobooks for transfer to your MP3 player; to free borrowing, through the interlibrary loan system if items are not on Butterfield's own shelves, of a wide variety of books (including large print and audio versions), CDs, DVDs, video and audio recordings; and, perhaps most important, to the free personalized assistance of Gillian and the rest of the dedicated library staff.
It is a waste of time and money, provided by us, for the Town Board and Supervisor, to continue this manufactured controversy. Indeed, I would hope that the members supporting the non-payment decision in the first place will offer to reimburse the town for the legal expenses incurred.
