Impeach Bush and Cheney Now To the Editor:
President Bush and Vice- President Cheney continue to violate our Constitution and the rule of law. These violations include warrantless wiretaps of Americans, denial of the right of habeas corpus, and Presidential signing statements claiming the right to modify laws passed by Congress. They have misled us into a disastrous war in Iraq.
Congress should now begin the process of impeaching Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. Only in this way can we reaffirm the rule of law and the provisions in our Constitution for congressional oversight and the protection of personal liberties.
Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney claim that "9/11 has changed everything," but it has not given them absolute power. This is a nonpartisan issue. If Congress chooses to remain passive until January, 2009, and does not challenge Mr. Bush's illegal assertion of executive powers, these powers will be passed on to future Presidents, Republican or Democratic.
Members of Congress have taken an oath to enforce the Constitution. Now is the time for them to do so. Ask our congressional representative John Hall to fulfill his Constitutional obligation. Write to him or call him at 1-800-426-8073 and tell him to get impeachment "off the table" and onto the floor of the House.
