Children of Darfur New Exhibit of Photographs by Ron Haviv at Fovea
Fovea's third exhibition will be on the children of Darfur by world-renowned war photojournalist Ron Haviv, who traveled to the west Sudanese province with Unicef. The limited edition color photographs will be accompanied by a multimedia presentation, and Ellen Tolmie of Unicef will be present at the opening reception.
Since 2003 the continuing conflict in Darfur has torn apart the lives of over 2.5 million people. Haviv gives viewers a haunting look at life among the civilian children of this desert region, who have endured years of hardship and brutal civil conflict. Young girls and women risk their safety daily while performing acts of survival such as gathering water and firewood. The teenager in the red scarf, pictured with two of her friends, was terrified every day, reports Haviv. Yet she felt it was her responsibility to leave the camps in search of food for her family, despite having been attacked and raped in previous excursions.
Haviv's experience documenting the world's conflict zones spans 20 years. His photographs have been used to move individuals, politicians and people in power to take action in humanitarian and ethnic crisis. He spent 10 years covering the conflict in the Balkans, which earned him a death threat. The photographs he took there were subsequently used as evidence in the U.N. war crimes tribunal.
A co-founder of the photo agency VII, Haviv has earned some of the highest accolades in photography, including awards from world press photo, picture of the year and the overseas press club, as well as the Leica Medal of Excellence. He has also published two critically acclaimed collections of his photography: Blood and Honey: a Balkan War Journal, and Afghanistan: On the Road to Kabul, which will also be for sale in conjunction with the exhibit. 20% of all proceeds from book or print sales will go to Unicef's Darfur fund.
