Putnam Valley Library Board of Trustees Announces 2007 Award Recipients

The Putnam Valley Library Board of Trustees is proud to announce the 2007 recipients of its annual Virginia Connolly Award for Distinguished Voluntary Public Service, the Harriet E. Gair Community Spirit Award, and the Volunteer Library Service Award. The Awards will be given out at the Library's 70th Anniversary Gala on Sunday, September 30.

The Virginia Connolly Award acknowledges a resident of the Town of Putnam Valley who has made an outstanding contribution to enriching the life of our citizens. The Trustees of the Putnam Valley Library are pleased to announce that Ms. Karin Greenfield-Sanders is the 2007 recipient of the Virginia Connolly Award for Distinguished Voluntary Public Service. Ms. Greenfield-Sanders was selected for her work as Chair of the Comprehensive Plan Committee and her efforts related to the current Comprehensive Plan and forthcoming new Zoning Code.

Supervisor Sam Davis stated that Ms. Greenfield-Sanders deserves this Award because of "the hours she has contributed to this task, the dedication she has shown, and her determination to see this project through... She has volunteered for this community for years, but her work for our new Comprehensive Plan and rezoning has been extraordinary."

In 2006, the Library Trustees established the Harriet E. Gair Community Spirit Award, to honor a Putnam Valley volunteer who exemplifies a dedication of time and a generosity of spirit to help others in the community. The Trustees of the Putnam Valley Library are also pleased to announce that the volunteer members of the Putnam Valley Town Day Committee are the recipients of the 2007 Harriet E. Gair Community Spirit Award.

Mr. Philip Rush stated in his nomination letter that "the goal of the Town Day 2007 Committee is to plan an annual event that will bring the community together for fun, friendship… Each member has their own special talent and coordinates a subcommittee charged with a specific task. Committee members volunteer their time and in some cases donate their own personal resources to ensure the event's success." The members of the Committee are: Ed Hertzel, Debbie Petranchik, Sue Rosenbeck, Thea Moeller, Kathy Colonna, Anne Spoonhour, Ragnar Pedersen, Rich Chizzik, Sheryl Keating, Louie Luongo, Dawn Powell, Virginia Capodieci, Larry Cobb, and Jon Zupan.

Each year the Trustees also select an individual to receive the Library Volunteer Service Award for Outstanding Service to the Library. The 2007 recipient of this Award is Don Graesser for his volunteer hours sorting book donations and organizing the book shed into fiction, romance, non-fiction subjects, paperbacks, etc. The shed is open during Library hours April through November, except for inclement weather. Books are for sale at the bargain price of $5 per bag.

You are cordially invited to attend the Putnam Valley Library's 70th Anniversary Gala Reception & Dinner, Sunday, September 30, 2007 from 2pm until 7pm in the Community Room of the Library at 30 Oscawana Lake Road. A free reception and Awards Ceremony will be held between 2-5pm. Dinner will follow at 5:30pm; tickets for the dinner are $25 per adult, $15 per child under 10, and $5 per child under 5. Please contact the Library 845-528-3242 for further information.
