Assemblywoman Galef Announces Fall Internship Program

Assemblywoman Galef has begun her fall internship program for high school and college students. This will be the fifteenth year of the program, which offers students a unique educational experience by participating in the everyday activities of their local government and serving their community.
Interns help run Assemblywoman Galef's office in downtown Ossining. During their time in the office, they will work on significant projects and gain first-hand knowledge in a number of different fields. Interns write letters, research bills, write press releases, work on newsletters, and deal with constituents. Many interns also focus on special projects and join Assemblywoman Galef at community events.
These unpaid internships offer a valuable opportunity for volunteers to make a difference in their community, and to learn or improve skills that will be important throughout their lives. "Interns learn through their work in the office," said Assemblywoman Galef. "Not only are the interns able to utilize the talents they already possess, but they can also improve and develop new abilities that can last them the rest of their lives."
Two such young people who interned at Assemblywoman Galef's office during this past summer include Sam Chalsen, a senior at Briarcliff High School, and Alex Milner, a senior at Haldane High School. The two interns will soon be featured on Assemblywoman Galef's television program "Dear Sandy."
"The variety of assignments that I have worked on during my internship has really broadened my horizons," said Sam Chalsen. "Not only have I learned more about the legislative process, but I now have a first-hand understanding of many current issues, having done research on everything from the right to perform a marriage ceremony to how loud movie trailers are to safety regulations for nuclear power plants. This internship has truly been an invaluable experience for me."
"I've learned so much while I was here," said Alex Milner. "It made for an excellent summer. I worked on legislation relating to staff infections in hospitals. Health care is a really important issue and to be able to help do something about it was really thrilling."
