Westchester Kennel Club Hosts Dog Show, Agility Trial at Historic Lyndhurst Estate
It's a weekend of beautiful and athletic dogs at Lyndhurst Estate on Saturday and Sunday, September 8 and 9, as the Westchester Kennel Club stages its 91st annual All Breed Dog Show and its first annual Agility Trial on the grounds the National Historic Trust site in Tarrytown.
In the weekend's headline event on Sunday, nearly 2,000 dogs, representing nearly all of the 169 AKC-recognized breeds and varieties, are expected to be on hand to compete in the Westchester conformation show. Two breeds recently recognized by the American Kennel Club will be making their debuts at Westchester - Swedish Vallhunds and Tibetan Mastiffs.
Competition begins with breed judging at 9am, with decisions coming from a panel of 26 judges from 15 states, Canada, the United Kingdom and Sweden. Dogs selected as a Best of Breed winners advance to one of seven different Groups (Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, Herding). The Group winners then meet in the final competition, where Best In Show Judge, Mr. Edd D. Bivin of Fort Worth, TX will choose the ultimate winner.
Other activities Sunday will include free show tours conducted throughout the day to explain dog show rules and judging procedures. Also, the club is offering the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen Test free of charge to all entered dogs. This program is designed to test a dog's response to everyday challenges in the real world. The public is welcome to watch, beginning at 10am in front of the Mansion.
Admission on Sunday is $10 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under). A portion of the proceeds from the show will be donated to the National Historic Trust and to the American Kennel Club's Canine Health Foundation. Lyndhurst is located at 635 South Broadway (Rt 9). A special discounted parking and admission package for Sunday's event is available at 155 White Plains Road in Tarrytown, which includes parking, free shuttle service to and from the show, and admission for everyone in the car for $15 total.
Agility trial Saturday: AKC's fastest-growing sport: On Saturday, the Club will host its first Agility Trial beginning at 8am. Agility, the AKC's fastest growing sport for dogs, is an event that tests a dog's athletic abilities in negotiating a challenging obstacle course. More than 500 runs are scheduled. Admission to the agility trial on Saturday is $10 per carload, with free onsite parking.
