Philipstown Fortunate to Have Gibbons & Montgomery Running for Office Dear Editor:
I am not writing about party politics, who was endorsed and who wasn't, disparaging comments about other candidates, or issues in Philipstown that could and should be addressed. I am writing about two people I know, like, and respect!
On a superficial level they might be considered opponents running against each other for Town Board. On a deeper level, they represent the honesty and integrity needed to represent the residents of Philipstown in the best possible way.
Mike Gibbons:
Over the last twelve years I have gotten to know Mike Gibbons. Ten years, when I was on the Conservation Advisory Council for Philipstown, and the two ensuing years since I resigned. Over that time I have seen and heard Mike speak at C.A.C., Z.B.A., Town Board, and Planning Board Meetings. He is currently a member of the Planning Board. I have spoken to Mike formally and informally; and on the record. Over time this has become clear to me. He is not aligned with one segment or special interest in Philipstown. This means he has no debts or favors to repay to elected and appointed Town Officials, developers, or other special interests. I have seen him speak with an independent objective voice. He speaks from an honest place with integrity. I have not seen his opinions swayed by pressure from others because he has no debts to repay. To me, he has always honored his word, followed up our conversations with informed, objective facts, and opinions, and remained true to himself.
Nancy Montgomery:
Nancy Montgomery is my next door neighbor. I know her as a friend, mother of three boys, wife to a wonderful man, her work at the Philipstown Recreation Department, her passion to bring musicians and music to the Depot Theater, and as an E.M.T. worker.
For years we have sat on Nancy's front porch or down at the lake (Lake Valhalla ) where we live, and talked. Along with sharing our common gratitude for living in such a place as Philipstown, we would discuss issues facing our community. Whenever I would express a concern about this or that, Nancy would never reply off the top of her head. If she did not know the facts of the issue she would say so, then proceed to look into the matter. When next we spoke, of the issue in question, Nancy would give me an informed, objective, and honest opinion. I have the utmost respect for Nancy, because she has the honesty to say I don't know, and the integrity to do her homework and find out what she doesn't know.
On a personal level, I am glad to know such people as Mike Gibbons and Nancy Montgomery. On a community level, Philipstown is fortunate to have two such people running for Town Board.
