Indian Point Tests Sirens on Wednesday, September 12

Entergy Nuclear will test the Indian Point emergency notification sirens on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 2pm. All sirens will sound simultaneously at full-volume for four minutes in Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam counties. WHUD Radio (100.7 FM) will perform a test of the Emergency Alert System immediately after the siren test.

This test on September 12 requires no response on the part of the public.

The 156 sirens are located in a 10-mile emergency planning zone surrounding Indian Point, including 79 in Westchester; 51 in Rockland; 16 in Orange; 10 in Putnam County.

The current siren system remains the primary means for public notification until the new system is declared operational.

During an emergency at Indian Point, the counties would sound all sirens simultaneously for four minutes at full volume, alerting the public to listen to Emergency Alert System broadcasts on local radio or television stations for further information and instructions. Sounding the sirens is a signal for residents to listen to EAS broadcasts for important information. It is NOT a signal to evacuate.

EAS radio and television stations are listed in the booklet "Community Emergency Planning for Indian Point: A Guide for You and Your Family, " which is mailed to households located within 10 miles of Indian Point. Booklets are available through your local county emergency management office.
