Wait for Special Board Dear Editor:
The words in some of the songs at the annual Hoot on the Hudson, held at Little Stony Point on Sept. 9, can be seen as applying to our own wonderful Cold Spring Village. They can even indicate why and how we must preserve it now that we have the means to do so: the Comprehensive Plan Special Board.
The words are: "The Valley treated them kindly"; "writers and painters told of its beauty"; "it's a song about the brothers and sisters all over this land"; "if birds fly over the rainbow why can't you and I?"; and "will the world survive?"
As applied, the words are: We must keep the integrity of our Village which has treated us well. Painters, especially those of the Hudson School, have told of its beauty. We think about all of us as stakeholders. If birds can fly over the Village, why can't all of us see its height and majesty? And will Cold Spring Village survive?
Yes, Cold Spring Village will survive if we wait to hear from our Special Board, just as our ancestors waited to hear about a certain Bill of Rights missing from their (and our) Constitution. Was it worth the wait?
Karen Dunn, trustee and Village Board liaison to the Special Board, tells us that the Special Board has been "making good progress" in many areas as well as on "identifying the community's needs" with regard to all of its stakeholders. It is crucial, then, that we "look at a moratorium" on development so as to provide "breathing space where everyone gets to look at the Village as a whole and the Village gets to decide what it needs most there."
The Special Board is what we depend on. If we let it do its job we will not have to ask, "Will this Village survive?"
