Flag Hawks Fall to Hyde Park in Season Opener
The Philipstown flag football Hawks traveled to Poughkeepsie to face off against Hyde Park on Sunday September 9. This was the season opener for both teams. This year's flag team has a mix of some experienced veterans and some new blood.
Hyde Park jumped out to an early 7-0 lead as both teams got rid of their nerves. Just before the first half drew to an end Philipstown stormed down the field with a drive of their own. Quarterback Tyler Outhouse handed the ball to running back Brandon Twoguns who followed the blocking of Luke Junjulas to reach the endzone. The play was made possible by the offensive line consisting of Kevin Barry, Anthony Lombardo, Thomas Percacciolo and Nicholas Telesco.
The defense started out the second half well with contributions from Nate Allen, Matthew Champlin, Mikey Chefalo, VJ Fina and Sam Giachinta. Nose guard Michael Champlin was in the Hyde Park backfield all game disrupting their plays.
Hyde Park built a sizeable lead in the second half, but Philipstown showed heart and on their last drive of the second half marched the ball up the field behind the strength of running backs Nicholas DiPalo and Wilson Thorpe. On the last play from scrimmage Twoguns followed a textbook block from Thorpe to score Philipstown's second touchdown of the day.
The final score showed Hyde Park winning 25-12 but the game was much closer than the score indicates. Come support the hawks at their next game at 12 noon on Sunday September 16 at Mayors Park.
