Spoken-word Performance Event at Depot Theatre Word of Mouth presents Fifty States to benefit the Theatre
On Saturday, September 29 at 8pm, Nine Hudson Valley literary artists will present a spoken word performance event using the fifty states of our union as a starting point for their creative efforts. Each member of the group will have eight minutes of stage time to address five or six states with complete freedom in form and content. Expect the unexpected, as writers with very inventive minds express themselves on a range of topics, from the personal to the political and beyond. Serious issues will be addressed, but humor will also be present. The formats will be varied, including poetry, memoir, satire, drama and song.
Examples: for California, a tale of animal rescue with a guy on the run from the FBI that involves animal smuggling across state lines; Connecticut's Darien will be the location for a satirical look at diet cooking; representing New York state will be a Flatbush cowgirl who can't get Brooklyn out of her bones; a desperate search for a minion in the coal mines will be set in West Virginia; and Marcy B. Freedman, Director of Fifty States, plans to "incorporate irrationality and physicality into her far-out fictional narrative, abandoning logic for the absurd and leaving propriety out of the picture."
The members of Word of Mouth met each other in workshops presented by the legendary performance artist, Karen Finley, held at The Hudson Valley Writers Center, Sleepy Hollow, NY. Each workshop culminated with a performance at the Center. One such event, a benefit for victims of Hurricane Katrina, was so successful - both as a fund-raiser and as an artistic showcase - that the group decided to continue performing on its own. The writers/performers later appeared at The Cornelia Street Café in Manhattan and at The Katonah Museum of Art.
Tickets for Fifty States are $10 with all proceeds to benefit the historic Depot Theatre at Garrison Landing. A reception across the street at the Garrison Art Center will follow the performance. This event was funded in part by Poets & Writers, Inc. with public funds from The New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
