4 Putnam Towns Receive State Assessment Awards
The Towns of Putnam Valley, Kent, Patterson and Southeast have qualified for the New York State Office of Real Property Services' (NYSORPS) Excellence in Equity Awards. Each of these municipalities qualified for a 2007 Excellence in Equity Award by conducting reassessment that met state standards for equitable assessments.
NYSORPS Executive Director Donald C. DeWitt said, "I commend the assessors in these municipalities for their efforts to provide fair assessments for their taxpayers. I also commend the elected local officials who support the assessors' efforts."
"Many taxpayers do not realize that reassessments do not raise additional taxes for municipalities," Mr. DeWitt added. "Rather, reassessments help to ensure that the taxes to be collected by the school district, county, and city or town are distributed fairly. The taxpayer is the ultimate beneficiary of fair assessments."
Local officials from each municipality will be presented with awards by representatives of the State Office of Real Property Services.
State Law requires all properties in each municipality to be assessed fairly based on market value (or a uniform percentage thereof), each year. By adjusting assessments to reflect market value, these municipalities took the necessary steps to ensure that property owners are fairly assessed and do not pay more or less than their fair share of taxes.
When assessments are not adjusted to reflect current market values, property owners who are overassessed will actually subsidize the tax bills of those who are underassessed.
In addition to qualifying for Excellence in Equity Awards, these municipalities may be eligible to apply for State Aid for Quality Assessing.
