Plea for More "Meet The Candidates" Forums To the Editor:
My wife Anita and I attended last Sunday's "Meet The Candidates" meeting at the Cold Spring Fire House and learned a lot about what each of the candidates would bring to the Philipstown Town Council.
We wish to express our appreciation to the Philipstown Democratic Committee and to the Cold Spring Fire Company for sponsoring this meeting and to the candidates for being willing to engage in this process. It was very informative and focused on actionable ideas, as opposed to political rhetoric.
This meeting and the one held at the Garrison Fire House on September 9 certainly establish an excellent model for future meetings over the course of the rest of this fall's ampaign.
By the time you publish this letter, the Primary will be over and the field of candidates for the General Election on November 6 will be set. I really do hope that a variety of individuals and groups will step forward and agree to sponsor "Meet The Candidates" forums on several occasions and in different parts of our Town.In this way the people of Philipstown, no matter where they live, will get the opportunity to hear directly from all the candidates. Unfortunately we do not have a local chapter of the League of Women Voters, which would sponsor these meetings if they were here. Therefore, I would like to extend an open invitation to any community-oriented individual or group to step up and sponsor or co-sponsor one or more of these forums at different locations around Philipstown.
We have a good field of candidates running; they have many ideas about how we can work together to create a vision for the future of our Town. So, let's hear from them directly in a format that works and is convenient for everybody. After all, dialogue, discussion and debate are the foundation upon which our democracy is based.
I sincerely look forward to participating in these forums and to sharing my ideas with the other candidates and with the voters.
