NY State Volunteer Service College Scholarship Seeking Applications for Nominations
The New York State Volunteer Service Scholarship, created by the legislature to boost membership in volunteer fire and ambulance squads, is an effort to encourage college students to enter the volunteer ranks for these critical community services.
Volunteer fire companies and ambulance squads nominate new recruits for the college scholarship. The second deadline for nominations is Oct. 15, 2007. Volunteer fire or ambulance companies, which have not already nominated a candidate this year, may make one new nomination for the 2007 scholarship.
The scholarship is administered by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), the state agency that helps people pay for college.
Recipients receive an award amount up to the average cost of tuition at the State University of New York. The award may be used for tuition at either a private or public college or university located in New York State.
The nominee must be a New York State resident; a high school graduate or equivalent; enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program taking at least six credits a semester; and remain an active member of the volunteer organization while attending college. Complete eligibility details can be found at the HESC website: www.hesc.com
Information and application packets were sent to volunteer fire and ambulance companies this spring. If your volunteer fire or ambulance organization has not received an application, please call HESC's Scholarship Unit at 1-888-697-4372 to request a new form and be added to the mailing list.
HESC is the largest in-state student loan guaranty agency and provides more grant and scholarship money to college students than any other state in the nation.
The state agency guaranteed more than $7 billion in new and consolidated student loans in state fiscal year 2005-06 and provided more than $865 million through the New York Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) to nearly 395,000 students in academic year 2005- 06.
HESC administers New York's 529 College Savings Program, a nationally-acclaimed program which boasts more than $5 billion in assets and handles more than 20 state and federal grants and scholarships.
