Adirondack Mountain Club Sponsors Local Hikes During the Fall
The Adirondack Mountain Club is sponsoring a number of hikes in this region over the coming months as follows:
Sat Oct. 13: Locust Grove/ Samuel Morse Estate Poughkeepsie, easy, for those new to hiking or those who prefer a more leisurely pace. Try out some of the new trails at this lovely riverside property. Meet in the parking lot at 9:30. Bring lunch/beverage. Rain Cancels. Leader: Nancy Keenan-Rich, 452-1727, nkrich@hvc.rr.com.
Mon Oct 15, rain date Oct 16: Paddle on the Esopus, Saugerties, easy, paddle canoes and kayaks, easy flatwater trip on the Esopus creek which is lined with a variety of big trees that should be very colorful in mid-October. Meet at the Saugerties Town Beach, right off Rte.9W in Saugerties, at 12 noon. Round trip is about 6 miles; bring lunch and water, extra clothing, life jackets, and a bathing suit if it's an Indian Summer day. Leader: Judy Mage jmage@usadatanet.net, 255-7671
Sat Oct. 20 Rain date: Sun Oct. 21. Fahnestock State Park, easy, a lovely 4 mile hike to Jordan & Beaver Ponds, to view signs of the early settlers who eked out a hardscrabble existence there hundreds of years ago. Departs at 10am. Sat, Nov 10: Bear Mountain Walkabout, moderate, for those new to hiking or those who prefer to a more leisurely pace. Walk across the Bear Mountain Bridge, and two bridges crossing the Popolopen Creek, while enjoying the Trailside Museum (nominal charge), Fort Montgomery Museum (nominal charge if you choose to enter), Hessian Lake, the Innskating rink-carousel area, and Hudson River boat docks. Bring lunch, water, and sturdy footwear. Please note that extreme heights will be encountered on the bridges. Meet at 9am, Route 9D, just north of the Bear Mt. Bridge. Sun Dec 2: Mt. Taurus, 9-D north of Cold Spring, moderate, outstanding views, moderate pace. Meet at Fishkill Holiday Inn or other convenient location(s) at 9 a.m. Refreshments following if people would like to. Leader: Pete McGinnis, pmcgin1@aol.com.
Sat Dec. 15: Appalachian Trail in Pawling, moderate, hike the AT along Hammersly Ridge and past several high-elevation swamps. Relatively flat with short ups/downs; 7.4 mi.; moderate pace. Sun Dec 16: Black Mountain Harriman Park, moderate, for those new to hiking or those who prefer to a more leisurely pace. 4.5 mile hike at a mountain fronting the west side of the Hudson River . Moderate elevation gain. Lots of Harriman Park history in this hike. Meet at Route 9 McDonalds in Wappingers Falls.Leader: Sue Mackson845- 471-9892, susiem6@juno.com. Heavy rain, ice, snow cancel. Or, if there's good snow, get together for some cross country skiing at Baird Park.
