Veterans of Foreign Wars Announces Scholarship For High School Students

Commander Phil Schatzle of the Cold Spring VFW Post 2362 announces the kick-off of this year's VFW " Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition." Junior and Senior High School students in the Philipstown area have the opportunity to compete in the annual audio essay competition and win thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C. Students compete by writing and recording a three to five minute audio/essay expressing their views of this year's patriotic theme, "My Role in Honoring America's Veterans."

Students begin by competing at the local Post level. High School Social Studies teachers at Haldane will have applications and other information available after Monday September 24, 2007. Deadline for entries at the VFW Post level is November 1, 2007. During more than 60 years, the Voice of Democracy program has involved more than seven million high school students. Monetary awards are given at the Post, Putnam County, and District levels. All state winners receive at least $1000 and the national winner $30,000. A total of $146,000 will be awarded at various levels of the competition.

Juniors and Seniors from Philipstown who are attending other high schools are also welcome to compete in this VOD program. Applications are available by calling Phil Schatzle at 265-2506. Additional information is available at www.vfw.org .
