New Technology Aids in Citations and Arrests of Traffic Violators
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest(s) of two persons after an automated license plate reader alerted the deputy to outstanding registration violations of vehicles traveling along the roadways of Putnam County.
Deputy Brian Aisenstat was patrolling during the week of September 20, 2007 when the automated plate reading system which is permanently mounted in the patrol vehicle alerted him that a vehicle with a suspended registration was within the scanning area of the unit.
The deputy was able to take the descriptive information provided and match it to the offending vehicle(s) and conduct traffic stops of each.
On September 19, 2007 at about 5pm Kim Bernard, age 45 of Patterson, N.Y. was stopped on State Route 311 and arrested for operating with both a suspended registration and license. The plate reader indicated to the deputy that both had been suspended by the Department of Motor Vehicles in July of 2007 for an insurance lapse. After being processed at the scene of the stop Ms. Bernard was released pending a future appearance in the Town of Kent Court.
On the 20th at about 9:40am Anthony Dimarino, age 40, of West Islip, N.Y. was stopped on State Route 6 in The Town of Southeast and charged after the computerized unit indicated that the vehicle he was operating had a suspended registration for having no current insurance. During the stop the deputy also determined that the driver had no valid license and was in possession of a quantity of marijuana. The defendant was transported the Sheriff's Department headquarters in Carmel for processing and was subsequently released after posting $250 ball. The defendant is scheduled to appear in the Town of Southeast Court to answer the charges on October 5, 2007.
The Sheriff's Department currently utilizes one of the automated plate reading systems, which was obtained through a state law enforcement grant and is currently inthe process of obtaining several more of the units.
