Retired Teachers' Association to Present Program on Underground Railroad Secret Code Quilts

The Putnam Country Retired Teachers' Association is hosting a special presentation at its meeting and luncheon by Melanie and Joe Darensod, retired Putnam County teachers and Civil War re-enactors. Their presentation will tell the oral history that surrounds the secret code quilts, which some people believe were used to help escaping slaves during the era of the Underground Railroad. They will be appearing in period clothing as Lindley and Deborah Coates, actual persons from Lancaster, PA. There will be a hands- on display which includes two Underground Railroad Sampler quilts, African clothing depicting symbols, information hoards, and books.

They welcome all Putnam County Retired Teachers, spouses, and guests to their meeting and luncheon on Wednesday, October 17 at the Four Brothers Restaurant, Route 6 in Mahopac, at 11:30am. The presentation will follow the luncheon. Come early to view items on display and meet with friends and colleagues. For information on the luncheon

call Gloria Brannigan at 845- 223-5622. To join the association call Hap Kimma at 845- 878-6058.
