Free Mental Health Screenings, Program Available on National Depression Screening Day, Oct. 11
Area residents experiencing symptoms of depression can seek help and peace of mind through free mental health screenings that will be offered at Putnam Hospital Center on Thursday, October 11th, National Depression Screening Day.
Putnam Hospital Center, Putnam Family & Community Services and The Mental Health Association in Putnam County are reaching out to residents who may be experiencing symptoms of depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder by offering free screenings from 4 to 6 p.m. at Putnam Hospital Center, 670 Stoneleigh Avenue, Carmel. Attendees at the free screenings will have the opportunity to learn about these disorders, receive literature, complete a written screening test, and talk confidentially one-on-one with a mental health professional.
Following the screening, PHC Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health Services Medical Director Howard K. Weiner, MD, will hold a presentation on depression- "Depression: Beyond the Blues"- open to the community. A questionand answer period will follow.
Common symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, loss of pleasure in usual activities, feelings of hopelessness, and thoughts of death or suicide. Bipolar disorder also includes feelings of euphoria and/or agitation. Generalized anxiety disorder involves overwhelming feelings of tension that persist for months unabated and post-traumatic stress symptoms include nightmares, flashbacks, difficulty concentrating and efforts to avoid thinking about a traumatic event.
