National Reading Event Celebrated at Putnam Valley Elementary School
The Putnam Valley Elementary School hosted a very special reading on Thursday, September 20, at 2pm.
Dr. Marc Space, Superintendent of Schools, read the children's classic The Story of Ferdinand to two groups of students- Childside and Ms. Nicolosi's class- as part of the Pearson Foundation's Jumpstart Read for the Record campaign, which aimed to set a "world record" for the largest shared reading ever and raise money for early education in low-income communities
The Story of Ferdinand offers a beautifully illustrated portrait of a young bull in Spain who prefers lying under his favorite cork tree and enjoying the world around him to becoming a fighting bull. After the reading in Childside, which is a combined class of four teachers in four classrooms clustered at the end of one wing of PVES, Dr. Space chatted with veteran teacher, Mrs. Eileen LoPuzzo. She thanked him for coming and shared her fond memories of former teacher, PVES Principal, and District Superintendent, John Kleinegris, whose favorite book happened to be The Story of Ferdinand. Dr. Space reluctantly returned to his duties at the District Office with a promise to return and read to the children in the near future.
Asked about the importance of the afternoon's activity, PVES Assistant Principal, Louise Frangella said "Our children love to read and enjoy being read to. They were so excited to have our new superintendent as their guest reader."
