Barbara Scuccimarra Announces Candidacy for Town Board
Barbara Scuccimarra has announced that she will be a candidate for the Philipstown Town Board. He announcement follows:
"Many people call me at home, expressing their concerns about the direction of the Town of Philipstown and I can certainly understand why, they are worried about the of our community. That is why I have decided to run for Town Board.
"As a resident for over 35 years my husband, Tom, and I have raised two children, Kristopher & Ellie and have earned our living here in Philipstown, Tom as a Town Justice, and I as a florist, and business manager in Cold Spring and Garrison.
"Philipsptown is such a desirable place to call home. Both of our children attended the public schools here and Tom and I have been volunteers in a number of organizations so we know full well the trials and tribulations of the Towns and Villages of Western Putnam.
"Now, our children have grown up and so has our town. But I am not sure the Town Board is keeping up. Our problems seem to be over-development, over-taxation, and not keeping up with the times.
"Growth is a huge issue for our town. Over-development is something we must control. As Town Councilwoman, I will work with the residents and all of our volunteer boards to protect the character of our community and enhance the richness and beauty of our town. I am concerned about our environment, various types of erosion in our hilly areas, and our water and soil stability. We must never compromise protecting our zoning and planning laws and must bring these laws in line with our comprehensive plan and the visions outlined in Philipstown 20/20. We must continue the bio-diversity studies which I was involved with in North Highland and expand that study to all of Philipstown.
"I will insist upon open and transparent government, listening to and soliciting community feedback. I want to build on consensus when planning for the future, while using creative and alternative ways to pay for projects other than increasing taxes.
"I want to promote heritage tourism, which is one of our greatest asserts. Business is important to our town and I will encourage businesses to expand through Western Putnam Economic Development (WPEDC) and our county IDA (I served on that board in the past). Expanding our business base will help to expand our tax base.
"I will continue to be an active member in our community and will always remain open to all those who live in our community. We must be mindful of the residents who presently live here, both young and old and keep taxes in line so they can keep their homes. We must also provide adequate services to our seniors and young families, perhaps working in concert with the villages and county, to make living in Philipstown the best it can be.
"I welcome your suggestions, comments and ideas for the future of our town and hope you will find trust in me to do what is best on our behalf. I look forward to meeting you over the next six weeks and ask for your support and consideration."
