Tomann Announces Re-Election Bid For Philipstown Town Justice

Town of Philipstown Town Justice Stephen Tomann will run for re-election to the same position in the November 6 election. His candidacy announcement follows:

"Twelve years ago I began my first four-year term as Town of Philipstown Judge. Now I am again seeking your support at the polls. Twenty-two years ago I began a career as a trial attorney in the city, which replaced a brief career as an artist and a longer one as NY licensed art teacher.

"I was born in Brooklyn, (notwithstanding some inaccurate political ads) and moved with my family to Garrison in 1954 from Maspeth, Queens. My formal education began with kindergarten at Garrison, Loretto for eight years, Xavier for four, then in rapid succession, BC, Dutchess, Ladycliff, Albany, New Paltz and Pace Law. Thirty-six years ago I married Mary, now mother of three and grandmother of three and we live in Garrison.

"There are two town Justices who work together to cover matters in varying degree of severity, from arrest to trial. We cover our geographic Town and back-up the Village Courts as well as arraign for adjoining Towns when necessary. Our department has been blessed for many years, and so have you, with a devoted clerk who has recently retired to part time status, Mrs. Bowman.

"Our budget of just under one hundred thousand dollars covers the two Judges, our new clerk and one part time clerk. We must pay for stenographers when required, an occasional interpreter, copiers and computers, links to Albany, continuing training for all of us, books and anything else that needs replacing.

"The work is at once enjoyable and frustrating. Though I steadfastly demand respect for other's lives, rights and possessions there are always those who continue to ignore the law and rationalize their reckless and selfish behavior. They endanger us all. I will continue to do my job by enforcing the law as written and do so as fairly and as firmly as I am able for the ultimate benefit of you, the residents of Philipstown.

"Please vote for me this November on the Republican or Conservative line."
