Putnam Valley's Next Blood Drive to Be Held on October 16 at the Main Firehouse
The Putnam Valley Fire Department will be hosting its annual October blood drive on Tuesday October 16 from 2:30 until 8pm at the main firehouse on Oscawana Lake Road. The October Blood Drive and Roast Beef Dinner remembers Bert Kandell, a long time member of the fire department who was active in the first Putnam Valley blood drives. If you'll bring the blood, they've got the food. The need is great, so they have a goal of 100 pints! Their last blood drive was two months ago, so if you gave then, you can donate again at the October drive.
There is still no substitute for human blood. It is needed for surgery, for emergencies and many illnesses. The blood supply is so low, that not a pint is wasted and at times people must postpone medical care to wait for extra matching blood to be available. Your community needs every pint. So if you have ever driven by an accident or watched a natural disaster on the evening news and said to yourself that you would do something to help if you could.... well, donating blood is one of those things.
If you are healthy enough to donate, why not consider sharing the luck with some people who could really use it? The blood that saves lives is the blood that is already processed and in circulation when the emergency happens. Collected blood will be processed, out to hospitals and back in circulation in less than 4 days. That is how critical the need is right now.
You need to be in good health, weigh at least 110 lbs and be at least 17 years old. If you're over 75 you will need a note from your doctor. Donating is almost painless. The whole process takes about an hour but the donation only lasts about 10 minutes, Bring a book, bring a friend, and roll up your sleeve. Call, visit the fire department website and send e-mail, sign up at Town Hall, or just walk in. Now, more than ever, please make regular blood donations a part of your life.
