17th Annual MS Discovery Day Supports Those with Multiple Sclerosis
The National MS Society, Southern NY Chapter hosts the 17th Annual MS Discovery Day at the fully-accessible Westchester Marriot, Tarrytown, on Saturday, November 3 from 9am-3pm. The Southern NY Chapter supports people with MS and their families in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange and Sullivan Counties. For information and reservations call (914) 694- 1655.
MS Discovery Day is a daylong educational program designed to provide information and practical help in managing multiple sclerosis. The program is open to all people with MS, their families and friends as well as health related professionals.
The 2007 Keynote Speaker, Mary Ann Picone, M.D. is a board certified neurologist with 10 years experience in the field of multiple sclerosis.
MS Discovery Day begins at 9am with a continental breakfast and includes vendor displays demonstrating a wide array of MS- related products and books. Dr. Picone will speak at 10am. Additional speakers include Gil Backerman, PhD who will discuss MS Care Partner Stress and Kristen Perone, Senior OT, who will talk about Occupational Therapy and Orthotics.
MS Discovery Day, which also includes luncheon, is a wonderful opportunity for people with MS and their families to learn more about the disease while also having an opportunity to learn about programs and services offered by the National MS Society.
The National MS Society, which was established in 1946, is dedicated to "A World Free of MS". MS, which affects over 400,000 Americans, is an autoimmune disease that attacks the myelin tissue of the brain and/ or central nervous system. It has no known cause or cure and it is twice as common in women as in men.
The Southern New York Chapter, which is based in White Plains and serves clients and families in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange and Sullivan Counties, joins the Society's 58 other Chapters in helping the National MS Society to find a cure and meet the needs of Americans living with MS. In 2006 the Chapter raised $2.1 million through individual giving and major events that included the MS Walk; the Dystel Memorial Golf Classic for MS; The Swim Across the Hudson™ for MS; the Women Against MS Luncheon (WAMS); and the TZ Bike Tour for MS.
