Franciscan Friars of the Atonement Celebrate Blessing of Animals
As Franciscans and followers of St. Francis of Assisi, the Friars of the Atonement will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4), with three separate events, open to the public.
On Wednesday, October 3, at 7:30pm, they will celebrate the Transitus, a service commemorating the death of St. Francis of Assisi and held each year on the eve of his feast day, in St. Francis Chapel on the grounds at Graymoor.
On October 4, the Solemnity of St. Francis of Assisi will be celebrated with an 11:30am Mass in St. Francis Chapel.
The Friars of the Atonement will hold their annual Procession and Blessing of the Animals in honor of St. Francis on Sunday, October 7 at 2pm. In case of inclement weather, the blessing will take place entirely in Pilgrim Hall. Otherwise animals and their human friends are invited to gather at the entrance of the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center for the procession.
The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement are a religious community of brothers and priests founded in 1898 by Father Paul Wattson. Their worldwide ministries include Christian unity; interfaith dialogue among Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists; serving the homeless and those suffering from alcoholism, drug addictions, and HIV/AIDS; preaching the gospel in parishes around the world, and offering respite and hope at the Spiritual Life Center to those in need of spiritual renewal.
