Threatened Recycling Shutdown Impacts Every Living Resident of Putnam County
To the Editor:

I just learned that our Putnam County Legislature, including our own Philipstown representative, Vinny Tamagna, is on track to shut down the county recycling program. What perilous step backward into the dark ages, after so much progress is being made to be good stewards of our environment.

My kids help me recycle every week: they help separate out recycling items, help me bury the compost, and help me take batteries to the recycling center. It's not just chores them - they know how important our planet is, and how recycling is one method we use to help preserve and reuse our resources, and reduce our impact on the explosive climate crisis.

But if this proposal goes through, it means no more recycling drop-off centers, no more recycling education school programs, and reduced or no licensing enforcement oversight of commercial trash haulers.

Please, Mr. Tamagna, don't you and your colleagues tell me it's about money. If the county needs to make cuts, do it from something that doesn't impact every living resident of Putnam County. Sell some property, for instance. You have plenty of that. But don't change something so vital to our health both individual and planetary. A lot of good people have worked very hard to make recycling a part of our daily lives here in Putnam County. Don't turn your back on them, and don't turn your back on the future. Make sure my grandkids can someday help me separate paper from plastic.
