Expanded Raffles and Room at Kent Library Fall Book Sale

| No, it is not Easter at the Kent Public Library. And no, the 15 colorful baskets bordering the library's front desk were not delivered by an oversized white bunny.
The eye-catching baskets are to be raffled off at the close of this weekend's Friends Fall Book Sale. They are the final product of an idea that originated with Friends of Kent Library director Sue Kotzur. Each was the direct result of many Kent merchants' generosity.
"You know how you see those Shop Putnam signs everywhere?" Kotzur asked. "Well, I just thought why not 'Shop Kent'?"
Kotzur was joined by fellow Friends director Richard Harrison and Friends volunteer Kaye Baum. The three Friends were thrilled with the warm reception and positive responses they received as they went, literally, door-to-door soliciting donations for the Book Sale raffle baskets. "Everyone was really very helpful," Baum said as she and Kotzur recently made last minute adjustments to the baskets.
Raffle tickets are on sale now at the Kent Library. Tickets will also be sold during the Book Sale this Sat. and Sun., Oct. 13 and 14 at the Kent Town Hall. "We're going to do this like a Penny Social," Kotzur said.
While merchant generosity accounts for the increased number of gift baskets, continuous popular response to the semiannual Book Sale accounts for the expansion within the Kent Town Hall space. The Town Hall is located at 25 Sybil's Crossing within the Kent Town Complex on Route 52.
Harrison and Kotzur are planning to convert the foyer into the Children's Book section complete with pint-sized table and chairs. A Home Schooling section with educational texts will be among several new categories presented at the sale.
New topics in the Special Book Room will include Civil War, Native American and Black History books. Returning will be WWII, oversized coffee table tomes, signed books, First Editions and numerous old and collectible volumes.
Fall Book Sale hours are: Sat., Oct. 13 from 9am to 5pm and Sun., Oct. 14 from 11am to 3pm. Early Bird Friends will be admitted at 8:30am Sat. for a head start on Book Sale shopping. Memberships may be purchased at the door for $10.
