Chapel of Our Lady Restoration Groundbreaking October 21
Public cordially invited

The board of the Chapel of Our Lady Restoration is pleased to announce a groundbreaking ceremony for its chancery building on Sunday afternoon, October 21, at 2pm, and cordially invites the public to join in this happy occasion. Seth Gallagher will play bagpipes, and champagne and other refreshments will be served. A silent auction of a dozen donated works of art is part of the festivities.

In addition to private funds, this project is made possible by grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the Empire State Development Corporation.

Providing restrooms and changing rooms for wedding parties and performing artists, an office and an archive, the chancery is the first essential improvement since the chapel's rescue from abandonment 35 years ago. It will enable expansion of programs and services to a broader range of people from school children to seniors, making this beloved landmark an even greater asset to the community.

Tucked discreetly into a natural incline behind and below the chapel, the new building utilizes existing foundation walls for a courtyard, and a roof garden further integrates it into the landscape. It was designed by architect Peter Smith, who has many years experience designing structures in the Hudson Valley with a special appreciation of its topography and natural materials.

The works on auction are by the late Mary Louise Boehm, a celebrated concert pianist who studied art in Amsterdam, Bogota, and in New York City at the New School and Art Students League. She worked in oils, watercolor and inks, but while on concert tours in South America, she also became interested in textiles, eventually choosing batik as a painterly textile medium. Iowa native, child prodigy and Fulbright scholar in Paris, she was noted for her pioneering recordings, one of which won a Grammy nomination, and for performances of works by American and lesser known early Romantic composers. Ms. Boehm was the wife of violinist Kees Kooper, and they performed regularly together for many years. Mr. Kooper has played a number of concerts in the chapel and donated the art to benefit the music series.

The ecumenical chapel, at 45 Market Street, Cold Spring, New York, was built in 1833 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It has a volunteer board and is host to weddings and other gatherings, an acclaimed annual music series free to the public, poetry readings, lectures and special events. Free parking is available on weekends at the adjacent Metro North Train Station.
