Violinist Soovin Kim and Pianist Jeremy Denk to Play at Howland Center
The Howland Chamber Music Circle will present violinist Soovin Kim and pianist Jeremy Denk in an all-Brahms program on Sunday, October 14 at 4pm.
Violinist Soovin Kim has been warmly received throughout the world since capturing first prize at the Niccolo Paganini International Violin Competition in 1996. He was subsequently awarded the honor of performing a concert on rarely played Gesua violin. One year later, he received the prestigious Henryk Szeryng Foundation Career Award, leading to performance and recording engagements throughout Europe. He was again honored in 1998 with an Avery Fisher Career Grant and was a Bronze medalist at the 2002 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. He has been the recipient of the prestigious London-based Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award for 2005 and will tour the major European centers this fall including the Konzerthaus in Vienna, Queen Elisabeth Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Mr. Kim's musical activities encompass a wide range of repertoire from Bach to works by living composers. He regularly performs for the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, with many renowned orchestras and, as a recitalist, in some of the world's major musical centers.
Pianist Jeremy Denk, already well known to the Chamber Music Circle's audience will be Mr. Kim's partner for this concert. He has gradually built a reputation as one of today's most compelling young artists, with a wide-ranging, challenging repertoire. A1998 recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, he also won the 1997 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. He made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2005 and has appeared as soloist with major orchestras in the United States and Europe. In a review of his 2001 performance of Bartok's Second Piano Concerto, a New York Times critic wrote: "Hearing Mr. Denk's bracing, effortlessly virtuosic and utterly joyous performance, one would never guess how phenomenally difficult the piano part is.
For their concert at the Howland Center, Mr. Kim and Mr. Denk have chosen to play the three Sonatas for Violin and Piano, Nr.1 in G Major Op. 78, Nr. 2 in A Major, Op. 100, and Nr. 3 in D minor, Op.108, by Johannes Brahms.
The concert will take place on Sunday, October 14, at 4pm at the Howland Center, 477 Main Street, Beacon and will be followed by a reception to meet the artists.
Tickets are $30 ($10 for students) and may be reserved by calling 297-9243.
