Donations Sought for "Give a Treat" Collection for Philipstown Food Pantry at Annual Halloween Parade
Gold Award Girl Scout project raises awareness of issue of hunger
By Danielle Bassignani

My name is Danielle Bassignani, I am a Junior at Haldane and a Senior Girl Scout. I am working towards earning my Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout age 14-17 can earn. I am working with many people to raise awareness of the commonly faced issue of hunger. Hunger is a worldwide problem that affects many people, yes even in Cold Spring. Many of our locals are very unaware of the Philipstown Food Pantry and even more so of the fact that people utilize its existence. When we think of food pantries, most think of holiday time, but the fact of the matter is that there are people who depend on the food pantry for a source of their daily life essentials, not just around holiday time. What we need to do is become more conscious of the support we can give to help maintain awareness, to contribute to the food supply, and to give a hand running the pantry.

I am beginning the process of my Gold Award at the annual Halloween parade on October 27th, working with parade organizer Marilyn Heberling from ART TO WEAR. Incorporated in the annual event will be what we are calling "Give a Treat." I will be collecting non-perishable foods such as cereal, rice, pasta, canned soup, dry soup, canned fruit, canned vegetables, coffee/ tea/ hot chocolate, condiments, cake mixes, pancake mix/syrup, pudding/jello, baked beans, dry beans, other kinds of beans and also toothpaste, soap and shampoos, paper products, along with cash donations to help supply our local pantry. I also will be giving people information on the "who, what, where, when, why's" of the food pantry.

Along with the parade, I am teaching local children in school about hunger and how they can help, raising awareness of the food pantry, how to use it or help it, and giving our community many more chances to give back to their community by holding more food collections throughout the year.
