Kent Bird Tests Positive for West Nile Virus

The Putnam County Health Department has received notification from the New York State Department of Health that a Sharp-Shinned Hawk located in the Town of Kent has tested positive for West Nile virus. This is the first bird that has tested positive for the virus in 2007. There have been no mosquito or human cases of West Nile virus in Putnam this year.

The mosquito season is coming to an end soon; however, residents should continue to re-inspect areas around homes eliminating potential mosquito breeding grounds. This includes removing all sources of standing water since reoccurrence of warmer weather will cause adult mosquitoes to become active again.

In addition, personal protection measures should be taken if warmer weather follows a cold spell. Wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors. Application of a mosquito repellent containing DEET (N,N,-diethyl-m-toluamide) should also be considered to prevent mosquito bites. It is important to follow label directions and never allow children to apply DEFT products to themselves.

Residents should continue to report sightings of dead birds to the Health Department. Please note that not every bird will be tested. Health Department staff follow specific criteria to determine if a bird will be collected for testing. For more information on the West Nile virus, call the Putnam County Health Department at 278-6130 or visit the Health Department's website at: www.putnamcountyny.com.
