Scenic Hudson to Receive Eleanor Roosevelt/Val-Kill Medal
To a list that includes royalty, political luminaries, celebrities and greats from journalism - add the environmental group Scenic Hudson. The Val-Kill medal is awarded annually to individuals who embody the spirit of the former first lady.
So why honor the whole organization? According to Val- Kill Executive Director Cathy Collins, "It would have been difficult to name only one individual. The integrity of how they conduct their work is what sets Scenic Hudson apart from other environmental organizations."
Scenic Hudson, the first organization to receive the medal in its 20-year history, is being honored for restoring the Hudson River, giving voice to citizen advocates, creating innovative solutions to complex environmental and economic issues, and creating 40 public parks.
Others receiving medals that day will include: Cherie Blair, worldwide advocate for women's rights and wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair; Pumla Gobodo- Madikizela, human rights champion, author and member of South Africa's historic Truth and Reconciliation Commission; and Curtis Roosevelt (oldest grandson of FDR and Eleanor), educator, writer with 20 years in the Secretariat of the United Nations.
Ned Sullivan will accept the medal for Scenic Hudson. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, October 14 at noon at Val-Kill, Route 9G, Hyde Park, with parking at Haviland School, off Rte. 9G, with shuttles to run regularly.
