Eleanor Roosevelt's Grandson to Speak at Ceremony Commemorating her Birthday
The National Park Service announced that Curtis Roosevelt, grandson of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt will be presenting remarks in the Rose Garden at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site on October 11 at 3pm to commemorate Eleanor Roosevelt's 123rd birthday. He will be sharing memories of his grandparents.
Curtis is the son of the late Anna Roosevelt Halstead, the oldest child of the President and Mrs. Roosevelt. Curtis and his sister Anna were the first two Roosevelt grandchildren and became familiar to the American public by their family nicknames, Buzzy and Sistie. Newspapers of the period regularly featured photographs or stories about their antics.
Mr. Roosevelt pursued a successful career in education, writing, and international affairs, including more than twenty years at the United Nations. He recently accepted a Visiting Professorship at the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations. He will be one of the 2007 recipients of the Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medals at the Medals Ceremony at the Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill on October 14. He is being honored for his leadership, which resulted in Mrs. Roosevelt's home at Val-Kill being preserved as a National Historic Site.
The Rose Garden Ceremony will also feature presentations of commemorative wreaths by various community organizations, including the Town of Hyde Park, the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post 1303, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, the Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill and the National Park Service.
After the ceremony, birthday cake and beverages will be served at the Henry A. Wallace Visitor and Education Center at the site courtesy of the Director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. The event is free. The public is cordially invited to attend.
