Congress Needs to Begin Investigating Bush's Actions To the Editor:
The issue of impeachment of the President is being discussed here and there in the media, though according to a recent Zogby poll of New York, a quarter of voters in our state don't have an opinion about it. I think it's important to define what the phrase "impeachment proceedings" really means - because it does not mean throwing the President out of office.
It means that Congress needs to begin investigating what many, including high-profile Republicans, believe are criminal actions on the part of the office of the President. The issue is not removing Mr. Bush from office, the issue is investigating his actions, which is not only the right of Congress, it is their duty. In addition to wiretapping millions of American citizens, there are multiple crimes to investigate, including the latest revelation that the President and his Attorney General circumvented Congress and the law in order to torture prisoners.
I am calling on all members of Congress, especially members of the Judiciary Committee and our own John Hall, to begin the investigation. I think most rational voters would agree that investigation is important, especially where high crimes and abuses of power are concerned. We are a nation of laws, and the law says Congress must investigate the President's potential crimes. Congress: start investigating.
