Fiscal Crisis has Been Brought on by Tamagna Voting Record To the Editor:
When it comes to libraries, what does Vincent Tamagna really stand for? In his recent insert in this paper, Legislator Tamagna wrote: "I thought I should make my position clear at this time. Libraries build communities!" Reading that, you would think Mr. Tamagna was in favor of funding libraries, right? Wrong. As this paper reported in May, Mr. Tamagna proposed that funding to libraries - and museums and mental health facilities - be reviewed for "possible decrease or elimination." That's a fancy way of saying "cutting all funding."
Mr. Tamagna says this is because the county is in a fiscal crisis - and it is. But that crisis didn't just appear like a rabbit out of a magician's hat. That crisis was brought on by Mr. Tamagna's own nine year voting record in favor of depleting the county's surplus. Why would Mr. Tamagna want to deplete a fiscal surplus? So that he could deliver a 0% budget increase and keep taxes low - and his popularity high. Now the surplus is so low that the County has lost its' protective bond rating. And taxes, as we all know, are going way, way up.
So what does Mr. Tamagna stand for? He says, "Libraries build communities!" and I agree, as any reasonable person would. But notice that Mr. Tamagna didn't say "Libraries should be funded by municipalities no matter what!" Mr. Tamagna uses phrasing that would have you believe he stands for funding libraries, but the fact is, Mr. Tamagna's solution to his own fiscal mismanagement is to gut library funding. It's becoming more clear to me that Mr. Tamagna, unfortunately, stands for Mr. Tamagna.
