Encourage Young Readers to Join Battle of the Books Next Year
To the Editor:

On Saturday, September 15, young people from 14 area public libraries gathered at the Millbrook High School for the 3rd annual Mid-Hudson Library System Battle of the Books. Over the spring and summer the 120 team members read 10 books chosen by a committee of librarians, became familiar with the stories and took part in related activities at their libraries.

The Regional Battle on September 15 included teams from the following libraries: Beacon, Cold Spring, Coxsackie, Hyde Park, Kinderhook, Millbrook, Plattekill, Poughkeepsie, Red Hook, Staatsburg, Stone Ridge, Esopus, Valatie and Wappingers Falls. The Butterfield Bookmarks from Cold Spring took home the trophy for 1st place and the Valatie Riders came in second.

We greatly appreciate the following generous supporters: Alcoa Fastening Systems, IBM, Senator William Larkin, Millbrook Rotary Club, Merritt Books (owner Scott Meyer was the MC), Grinnell Library, Town of Esopus Library Foundation, Ulster Savings Bank, Rhinebeck Savings Bank and Hannaford Stores and Millbrook Central School. Hats off also to the many librarians and coaches who worked all year with the teams to prepare them for "Battle".

Battle of the Books offers young people a wonderful opportunity to read great books and gather in the spirit of friendly competition. If you know 6th-9th graders who might enjoy this program, encourage them to check with their local libraries and join in the 2008 Battle of the Books.
