PVHS Inducts New Members to Spanish Honor Society

New inductees pose for an informal picture at PVHS
On Tuesday, October 2, 2007, Putnam Valley High School inducted 22 new members to the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz chapter of the Spanish Honor Society, Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica. The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is a national organization sponsored by AATSP (The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese). The purpose is to recognize high student achievement in Spanish and Portuguese and to promote a continuing interest in the study of the Spanish language and culture.

Mrs. Graciela Greenberg, the Honor Society's advisor at PVHS, welcomed all in attendance and offered the opening remarks.

The ceremony was performed by the current SHH Officers:

Alex Vucetic, SHH President Katie Mias, SHH Vice-President Melinda Cestaro, SHH Secretary, and Tom Ricci, SHH Treasurer

SHH was founded in 1953. Each chapter's name is chosen by the chapter's founder. This name is that of a famous literary or historical figure in the Spanish-speaking world. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a 16th-century Mexican poet. According to Mrs. Greenberg, "She was highly intelligent and better educated than most people of the time. Rather than marry and give up her studies, she became a nun. That way she was able to write and study at will. She is considered by some to have been the first feminist. Her poetry is magnificent. Her essays are very difficult to read as they are extremely abstract and written in difficult language. I founded the chapter in April of 2002 and have been its advisor ever since."

The new inductees were Chris Brothers, Matt Cordaro, Dillon Chesnut, Emily Curreri, Kaicee Gallo, Carly Hechler, Jenna Isabella, Madeline Kane, Mike Lobo, Kristen Macher, Deanna Mazzola, Maggie McCarthy, Lauren McIntyre, Alex Mignone, Kristin Otero, Kristen Saffo, Giovanna Spica, Alyssa Volpe, Kristina Vucetic, Tina Wallach, Tom Wharton, and Curtis Yarborough.

The PVHS administration was represented by Interim Principal, Richard Herlihy, the PVCSD administration was represented by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Barbara Fuchs, and the Board of Education was represented by BOE Trustee, Guy Cohen.
