Barbara Scuccimarra is Running for Town Council
The following is her platform statement:
"Having lived in Philipstown for 35 years, where I have worked as a florist, volunteered for years with Riverkeeper, and raised two children, I am running for Town Council so that I can give back substantially to the community that has been so good to me and my family. Over the years, our community has managed to retain its unique character, but as surrounding areas continue to develop at a rapid pace, I believe we must work all the harder to keep what we have.
"I am in favor of sustainable development, that remains in harmony with our area, but to ensure it we need to become active stewards of our own land. This means taking the necessary steps to control storm water, an area in which Philipstown is lagging other communities. Having learned the value of bio-diversity studies as a volunteer with the Hudson Highlands Land Trust, I would also propose conducting a comprehensive Town-wide bio-diversity study that would identify all environmentally sensitive areas such as wetlands, which could be adversely affected by the wrong kind of development. Such studies would also help in the management of storm water.
"To preserve our heritage and bring in additional revenues, I advocate working to increase tourism to all the wonderful historic places we have to offer, including Manitoga, Boscobel, the Foundry Museum and the Mandeville House- all of which could be stops on our new Trolley. And to keep Philipstown affordable, now and in the future, I would work to hold the line on taxes and to secure as many grants as possible in lieu of taxes. We need to work to create an Empire Zone, apply for Preserve America grants, and take advantage of all grant opportunities through the state and federal governments. I will work with the Town Board to do so, so that we can offset the burden on the property taxpayers.
"I believe strongly in open, transparent government, whose first priority is to protect the interests of our residents. With a judge in the family (my husband Tom Scuccimarra, now an appointed judge at the Court of Claims in White Plains, served here as Town Justice for 12 years), I am all the more aware of the importance of being impartial when serving the community.
"I have been endorsed by the Republican Party, the Conservative Party, and Philipstown First. If elected, I will provide Philipstown with a Town Council member who is an excellent listener, retains the facts, and views the position as an opportunity to serve every resident's needs. Please put Philipstown First on November 6 by voting for me, and also Cary Downey and Vincent Tamagna.
