Town Council Candidate Nancy Montgomery Presents Her Platform
The following is the platform statement for Nancy Montgomery, the Democrat candidate for Philipstown Town Council

"I believe that Philipstown's most important resource is our people.

"Time and again our residents teach me by example; public involvement and volunteerism contribute to the wellbeing of our town. Our quiet constituents, choosing a different road than the public arena, are also an important part of the framework of our community. Together they make this town what it is.

"I am extremely grateful to be chosen as a candidate for our Town Board. I am committed to representing all the people of Philipstown.

"My record of service to Philipstown is longstanding. It will continue. While serving on the Boards of the Rec. Commission, the Performing Arts Dev. Corp. and on the Vol. Ambulance Corps, I have gained a great appreciation for what residents want and need. I have the skills of diplomacy and teamwork to ensure that our town board works toward these needs.

"It's a critical time in Philipstown. On the schedules right now are projects that could compromise our landscape and skirt the spirit of our laws.

"The 'visionary developer group' PRM Realty is a potentially devastating threat. Their website advertises '1200 acres of forested hills with elevations up to 1600 feet providing spectacular Hudson River views'. Their prospectus for our beautiful ridges in The North Highlands will destroy the character of our town forever. Next door we have DeVido trying to cram 4 houses into a 3-lot subdivision on a road that, as a kid, I thought was a path.

"Concerned citizens, elected officials, planning and zoning boards are working hard to revise and fill the gaps in outdated laws and codes to make sure that what we have does not get exploited. We can further protect ourselves from these threats. I would support specialized training for town employees and board members so that they have the tools to implement and enforce our land use ordinances in a way that reflects our Comprehensive Plan.

"Our town has been financially stable for 15 years. We can keep it that way without compromising services.

"Private/Public partnerships can secure our financial future. Corporate sponsorships can play a big role in realizing public plans.

"The Philipstown Depot Theatre is a model for private/public funding partnerships that I helped create. The PPA, a non-profit corp., joins forces with The Town to build community through memberships, fundraising, in-kind services from local businesses and generous corporate sponsors. We provide educational and artistic programs that showcase local and professional artists. By networking in Philipstown and in neighboring towns, we attract people to the area through the arts and boost our economy. This is the kind of partnership that fits in with the character of our town. This model can serve as a road map for other needed services that do not solely depend on tax dollars.

"One of the biggest challenges our seniors face is declining health and fear that they can't retain the financial or physical independence to live in their own homes. Our seniors need services so that they can stay at home in dignity. We need to secure grants offered in the NYS Budget that include funding for Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC). Grass roots efforts and private/public partnerships around the country have also made ageing in place safe and affordable for a majority of elderly people. I would like to help create these assistance programs for our seniors.

"These are just two of the many solutions that I would like to work on if elected. Your vote on Nov. 6 will give you confidence in your future. Vote for strong experienced leadership."
