Putnam's First Handicapped- Accessible Trail Receives Hundreds of Plants From Local Nurseries

Local plant centers recently donated hundreds of native plants to support the building of Putnam County's first handicapped accessible trail on Putnam County Land Trust property in Brewster.

The trail materials were installed in August; the native plants were added in September to help hold the trail materials in place and to make the experience of the trail-goers even more enjoyable. The donating nurseries included Hardscrabble Farms (North Salem), Patterson Nursery (Patterson), Claire's Plant Center (Patterson), Peterson's Patterson Greenhouse (Patterson) and Middlebranch Farms (Brewster).

"The donated plants are beautiful, and vary in size which adds interest and visual appeal. We expect them to do well in this habitat," said eleventh graders Anna Eisenstein and Krista Gabarro, who are constructing the trail as a community service project to meet the requirements for a Diploma of Excellence from Carmel High School. "We would like to thank the plant centers for their generosity."

A number of people have already navigated the trail with wheelchairs as well as parents with children in strollers. "We are delighted that the trail is already drawing visitors" said Anna and Krista.

The project is not complete, however. Plans for the finished trail include sitting areas with benches, even more native woodland plants along the sides of the trail, signage and an interpretive nature guide.

Donations are still being accepted, and may be sent to PCLT, PO Box 36, Brewster, NY 10509.
