Girl Scouts Hit the Tents!
By ALL of the girls of Hudson Highlands Troop 2914

The girls of Hudson Highlands Junior Girl Scout Troop 2914, which consists of 4th grade girls from Cold Spring, combined two activities by going on their first "real" campout overnight and also taking notes and reporting on their trip for the PCN&R to earn a communications badge. After the trip, the girls got together and combined their notes to write this story all by themselves; later they toured the PCN&R to see how the paper is put together and they made up a sample page. In their own words:

On Saturday, September 29 to Sunday, September 30, 2007, Troop 2914 met other Junior Girl Scout troops at Camp Ludington, in Holmes, New York. It was about 20 to 30 minutes away. It was a small camp in the woods and had lots of hills and rocks.

The whole troop was there. The leaders who went are Mrs. Costigan, Mrs. Kane-Seitz and Mrs. Casparian. Twelve of the girls in our troop went. They were Lucy Austin, Caroline Casparian, Julie Costigan, Maisy Curto, Marissa DiPalo, Bennie Geithner, Tobey Kane- Seitz, Allison Marino, Sara Procario, Aubrey Stowell, Clara Thompson and Melissa Tringali.

We slept in platform tents. We all liked our tents. There were 4 people in a tent. The goal was to have fun and an outdoor adventure. Also another goal was to work together and learn new thing.

At first we hiked down to the arts and crafts area. We made nut and seed pictures. To knot and tents we learned how to fold and unfold a tent. It surprised us that that our box ovens actually worked! We made fabulous monkey bread in them. We think everyone likes s'mores.

For dinner we had tacos in a bag and monkey bread for dessert. Most people thought the tacos in a bag were the best. A lot of us also liked the monkey bread. For breakfast we had bagels with cream cheese, fruit loops and hot chocolate. It was delicious.

Not everything was great about our camping trip. The latrines were not pretty! But the worst part was that there were cobwebs. Yuck.

All of us agreed that it was fun and exciting and that we were happy campers. It was a great trip and we would recommend it to other girls.
