World Music Drumming at Haldane
 | | Haldane's Olivia Brown takes to the drums |
| The Haldane Music Department received a generous grant from the Haldane School Foundation to purchase 14 beautiful African drums as well as 35 auxiliary instruments and to participate in the World Music Drumming program. This cross-cultural curriculum was created by Will Schmid, a past president of the nearly 70,000 member Music Educators National Conference and professor of music education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Haldane students in grades 4-6 will benefit from World Music Drumming. As well as teaching about African and Latin-American cultures through drumming, this program enhances Haldane's character education program. It helps build important work and community skills such as communication and listening, cooperative teamwork and respect for others.
The young musicians have been having a great time with this program. They've been singing lots of new songs with accompaniments and movement as well as learning drumming and African and Latin- American cultural traditions. Meredith Nocton, Haldane Music Teacher states, "The World Music Drumming program has greatly enriched the elementary and middle school music curriculums." Many thanks to the Haldane School Foundation for making this wonderful opportunity possible for the children.
