Garrison Boys are Junior Black Knights Mighty Mites Football Stars at West Point
Three Garrison boys, Eddie- Joe Barry, and brothers Brian and Jack Kelly, are completing a winning 2007 season playing tackle football for the Junior Black Knights of West Point. The boys are playing under head coach Brian Kelly Sr. in the Mighty Mites division of the Orange County Youth Football League. The league consists of over 50 teams in five levels of football from 12 towns across Orange and Ulster counties. The Junior Black Knights Mighty Mites team has forty players of 6-8 year olds, including the Kelly brothers and Eddie-Joe.
The Kelly brothers are defensive specialists and are feared throughout the league for their astonishing pursuit and spectacular tackles. Brian primarily plays the defensive-end and linebacker positions. Consequently, Brian is among league leaders in tackles and sacks. Not surprisingly, opposing coaches have said Brian Kelly is a much younger version of Brian Urlacher, middle linebacker of the Chicago Bears. If you want to find the ball on the field, look for number 2, Brian Kelly, he is always where the ball is!
Jack Kelly plays the safety position and is one of the team's best tacklers. Jack uses speed and velocity to take down ball carriers almost twice his weight. His most important characteristic is that he has no fear when it comes to football. All of his teammates are glad he plays for the Jr. Black Knights and not on the other side!
Eddie-Joe Barry is the dominant lineman for the Black Knights. He has the skills to play all offensive line positions and key defensive line positions when needed. Essentially, on offense he is asked by his coaches to line up against and block the opposing teams biggest players in order to protect Black Knight ball carriers. On key defensive plays, Eddie-Joe is on the line to scare quarterbacks out of their shoes and crush any running back that dares to come through the middle.
Coach Brian Kelly is completing his first year as head coach of the Junior Black Knights and second year in the league. Brian's outstanding coaching staff is made up of Tom Bryant, Darnell Davis, Scott Knight, Guy Huntsinger and Nick Treratola. These gentlemen have turned the 40 players on their team into a fine group of young football stars. The boys are well disciplined, very determined and know the value of playing on the hallowed grounds of West Point. Currently the team is 3-2-1 with 1 game remaining before the Mighty Bowl Championship series, which will be played at Michie Stadium on Sunday, October 27.
