Shanghai Quartet Returns to Howland Center

The Howland Chamber Music Circle is delighted to present in a return engagement, one of its audiences favorites, the distinguished Shanghai Quartet on Sunday, November 4.

"Their whole performance was superb," said the New York Times. The Quartet, Weigang Li and Yi-Wen Jiang, violins; Honggang Li, viola and Nicholas Tzavaras, cello, was originally formed in Shanghai 25 years ago. This versatile ensemble is known for its passionate musicality, impressive technique, and multi cultural innovations. The Shanghai Quartet's elegant style of melding the delicacy of Eastern music with the emotional breadth of Western repertoire allows it to traverse the genres, from traditional Chinese folk music to cutting edge contemporary classical works.

The Quartet has made regular appearances at Carnegie Hall and performed on the world's most prominent concert stages, touring the great music centers of Europe, North and South America and Asia.

The Shanghai Quartet has also appeared in a diverse and interesting array of media projects. They performed on the soundtrack recording (Bartok Quartet No. 4) as well as making a cameo appearance on screen, for the Woody Allen film, and Melinda and performed on PBS's Great Performances television series. Other on-screen accomplishments include an appearance by violinist Weigang Li in the documentary Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China and cellist Nick Tzavaras' family was the subject of the 1999 film Music from the Heart which starred Meryl Streep.

For their performance at the Howland Center the Quartet has chosen to play the String Quartet in G Major, Op. 77, No.1 by Joseph Haydn, and two quartets by Beethoven, the Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 74 The Harp and the Quartet in C Major, Op 59, No.2

The concert will take place on Sunday, November 4, at 4pm at the Howland Center, 477 Main Street, Beacon and will be followed by a reception to meet the artists.

Tickets at $30 ($10 for students) can be reserved by calling 297-9243. Due to the popularity of this quartet's performances, reservations are highly recommended. Further information on this and other presentations by the Howland Chamber Music Circle can be found at www.howlandmusic.org
