Leibowitz was born in Queens, New York, and began composing for voice and piano as early as age twelve. He studied jazz piano, conception, and harmony with Connie Cruthers and Sal Mosea, both protégés of the legendary Lennie Tristano. Also conservatorytrained, Leibowitz studied at the Aaron Copland School of Music.

He was house pianist at the Village Door, the Terrace on the Park, and also for two years at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. On the college scene, Leibowitz performed in concerts at Queens College, Lehigh College, the College of New Rochelle, Dowling College, as well as many music festivals in and around the tri-state area.
From 1995 to 2000, Leibowitz released a series of CDs which include his critically acclaimed Three, and Piano Mountain and his song Broken in Two, which has been used on network and cable TV. A published BMI composer since 1995, Leibowitz has been awarded grants from Meet the Composer in 1996, 97, 98, and 2000.
Leibowtiz believes that "Mastery as a jazz performer consists of the ability to fully communicate one's feelings and spirit through one's personal expression."
