Tea that Creates Art, Art that Creates Tea Opens at Garrison Art Center
A perfect blend of visual and ceramic art based on the tradition of tea, "Tea That Creates Art, Art That Creates Tea" Curators: Beth Bolgla and Tracy Strong, opens on Saturday October 27, in the Anita Hart Balter Gallery at Garrison Art Center.
Tea That Creates Art is by Original T-Bag Designs, a consortium of artists who live near Cape Town, South Africa in an "informal settlement". They use recycled tea bags as tiny canvases for their art, using a single bag for a piece, or sometimes grouping as many as sixteen to a group of hundreds as was done for a piece commissioned by Oprah Winfrey. Each tea bag conveys a pure and festive folk spirit and is lovingly painted. In addition, money from the sale of their art is a vital part of the family income. Nomsa, one of the artists, has moved her family from a shack to a house thanks to the money she has earned painting tea bags. "The most wonderful thing in the world is hearing the rain on the roof and knowing my children are warm and dry," she says. This project employs 19 artists, 8 part-time workers, a handicapped group and supports 124 family members.
Art That Creates Tea is a remarkable group of original teapots created for the exhibit by 16 ceramic artists from all over the United States and England including Ron Myers, Silvie Granatelli, and Sandy Simon. The variety is a delight- there are teapots made of delicate porcelain, earthy stoneware and even a teapot made of paper. Please join us for the Opening Reception, October 27, 5-8pm, where you can meet with and talk with some of the ceramicists, and with Jodee Hetzer, Artist Representative for Original T-Bag Designs. The exhibit is on display October 27 - November 17, Gallery hours are noon-5pm daily. For more information please call Garrison Art Center at 424-3960.
