St. Mary's Opens Doors for Haunted Church, Trick-or- Treat Respite, on Halloween
With skeletons hanging-out in the tower, creepy chords crashing from the organ, mysterious "smoke" wafting down the aisle, and spooks lurking in the corners, St. Mary's Episcopal Church will throw open its (creaky) doors to the Haunted Church on Halloween, Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 8:30pm.
The event, held annually at the church at the corner of Routes 301 (Main Street) and 9D (Chestnut Street) in Cold Spring, offers trick-or-treaters and their parents a chance to come in from the cold, rest their feet, enjoy refreshments, meet friends (old and new), and spend time with the spectral.
On Saturday, Oct. 27, St. Mary's also will again provide its Great Lawn as the gathering place for the annual Cold Spring Halloween Parade. To stoke hungry gremlins before the trek to the river, the church will sell barbecued hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks, and other light fare at a nominal charge, starting at 5pm.
Begun in 2003, the Haunted Church welcomes visitors of all and no religious persuasions, at no charge. It has drawn hundreds from Cold Spring and beyond to partake in what Fr. Shane Scott-Hamblen, rector, has called "a horribly good time." Ghoulie Master Thom Harrington predicted "more than a dozen new frightful features" this year to beckon the brave. "In our renovations we discovered a mummy. That will be on display," he explained. "And there have been rumors that an entire family of ghosts haunts the grounds." He invited "all ghosts, monsters, goblins" and others of their ilk to see for themselves - if they dare!
