Putnam County Residents Urged to Pack Shoe Box Gifts for Hurting Children Worldwide for Operation Christmas Child

Local volunteers are collecting simple shoebox gifts personally packed by children, families, and individuals here in Putnam County. From Putnam County, the shoe box gifts will be sorted and sent using whatever means necessary- sea containers, trucks, buses, trains, airplanes, helicopters, boats, camels, even dog sleds- to reach suffering children around the world.

The South Highland United Methodist Church at 19 Snake Hill Road in Garrison is one collection point - please contact Pat Harrington at 424-3096 for more details.

The Mount Carmel Baptist Church is another local collection site. Located at 76 Gleneida Avenue in Carmel, 225-4255, the hours of operation for drop off are as follows:

Mon. Nov. 12, 5- 7:30pm Tues. Nov. 13, 5- 7:30pm Wed. Nov. 14, 6- 8pm Thurs. Nov. 15, 5:30- 7:30pm Fri. Nov. 16, 5:30pm- 7:30pm Sat. Nov. 17, 12- 6pm

Sun. Nov. 18, 8:30am- 12pm

Right Now you can join the effort to help the world's largest Christmas project handdeliver more than 8 million personalized gift-filled shoeboxes to children in some 90 countries suffering from natural disaster, war, terrorism, disease, famine, and poverty.

What you can do to get involved:

-Prepare-Enlist families, churches, scout troops, community groups, and businesses to take part in creating shoebox gifts for needy children worldwide.

-Pack-Fill shoe boxes with school supplies, toys, necessity items, candy, and a letter of encouragement. Step-by-step shoe box packing instructions are available at www.samaritanspurse.org.

-Process-Sign up to join Operation Christmas Child volunteers at collection sites in Putnam County as part of the effort to prepare millions of shoebox gifts for delivery to underprivileged kids on six continents.

Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, a project of international Christian relief organization Samaritan's Purse, has delivered more than 54 million gift-filled shoe boxes to needy children in some 120 countries.
