Haldane Capital Project to Address Much-Needed Repairs

Trustees on the Haldane Board of Education got some first-hand experience with the old adage "seeing is believing" when they toured the elementary and middle schools just prior to their October 17, 2007 workshop. The tour, led by Director of Facilities Wayne Robinson, highlighted a wide range of repairs being proposed as part of a capital project which must be approved by voters in a referendum that will take place as early as March, 2008. There was plenty to see in the buildings built between 1934 and 1979 - and now showing their age. Many of the repairs are being suggested for health and safety reasons and include: upgrading the twin-boiler steam heating system; roof and parapet repairs; repointing of brick fascia; replacement of the gymnasium heating coil; refurbishing the cafeteria floor; improvements to ventilation in the cafeteria, gym and some classrooms and removal of asbestos in a tunnel currently used for storage. At the end of the tour Superintendent Mark Villanti stated that he "didn't see any excess in the capital project." Trustee Bruce Campbell captured what seemed to be the view of board members regarding the capital project overall when he said, "It needs to be done - it's long overdue."

When the workshop got underway Villanti updated trustees on the search for a new principal for the middle school and high school. After interviews with nine candidates chosen from the more than 70 applicants, three finalists have been selected and were scheduled for further interviews on
