PV Videographer Arrien Counters Anonymous Mailings at Town Board Monthly Meeting
Comprehensive Plan DGEIS available for review before public hearing on Nov. 7
by Edward Paul Greiff

Maryann Arrien, Community Media Coordinator and Videographer, is shown in a sea of cameras and technology setting up the three cameras, streaming video connections and microphones she uses in preparation for the October 17, 2007 Putnam Valley Town Board meeting.
"Because I live in this town, my parents are buried in this town, and I want us to have the best media coverage possible, I attend media conferences at my own expense and bring the technology back to Putnam Valley. I use my own equipment (three cameras plus sound and editing equipment) and always make myself available to serve the Town's needs," said Arrien at the October 17, 2007 meeting of the Putnam Valley Town Board.

Maryann Arrien spontaneously spoke from the heart at the evening's meeting because of anonymous mailings circulating around town about her position and salary. She remarked that these mailings spread false and libelous attacks against her. Instead of the town thanking her for all of the above and beyond the call of duty effort she has put forth to make Putnam Valley Media the envy of other towns, she is being criticized. When she was done, members of the Town Board gave her a vote of confidence and a show of appreciation and told her, "You are not going anywhere - we want you."

Councilman Bob Tendy made a public appeal for people not to pay attention to any anonymous communication that's circulated, "they just aren't true," he said. "People feel they are helping their political candidate by doing this, it doesn't help."

During the Parks and Recreation Department report Director Frank DiMarco introduced a group of fathers who proudly reported on the success and growth of Little League baseball in Putnam Valley. He said that the Putnam Valley Baseball Association started with 8 teams and they are now up to 32 teams and some 345 children. He also said that they intend to have both a spring and fall league.

When it comes to Town Pride and the spirit of volunteerism it is hard to beat the efforts of Putnam Valley Arts. Ann Spoonhour keeps the flame alive by not being afraid to try new ideas. She said their recent "Putnam Valley Nature Photography" contest drew many outstanding photos of Putnam Valley. "We are surely going to repeat it again next year," she said. Ann complemented another volunteer, Jessica Ellard, for her tireless effort in putting together the art displays.

Their next big event is the Harvest Festival, to be held on Sunday, November 18 at the YMCA Camp Combe on Peekskill Hollow Road between 2 and 5pm.

During Legislator Oliverio's report he told the Board and audience that it was the first time in 17 years that he voted no on a County budget. He called this budget "filled with smoke and mirrors. It's a flawed budget. Once again they are using money they don't have to reduce the tax increase by taking $500,000 from a contingency fund and $500,000 from the Fund Balance." Mr. Oliverio said he can't stress this enough - "you can't spend money you don't have - it's a flawed budget and eventually the County must come up with the money to replace what has been depleted."

Oliverio ended his report on a positive note by saying although he will not be there, he will once again be providing the donuts for Lake Peekskill's Halloween party taking place on Saturday October 27 between 1 and 3pm at the Lake Peekskill Community Center. It is open to all residents of Putnam Valley. The kids are very creative in the costumes they come up with. If you think you can be a fair judge let them know, it's always a difficult but fun task.

Walt Thompson, Keep Putnam Beautiful Coordinator, displayed a new littering sign that will shortly be appearing on Putnam County roads. Sheriff Don Smith approved the sign which asks if you spot someone littering to report their license plate number to the Sheriff. Walt Thompson is campaigning to have littering fines be more than a slap on the wrist and is asking for a $1,000 fine.

The Comprehensive Master Plan DGEIS (Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement) is ready for public comment and a public hearing has been set for Wednesday, November 7 immediately following the 6pm Budget public hearing meeting at Town Hall.

The new owners of the yet to be opened "Putnam Bakery & Café" appeared before the Town Board to receive permission to tap into the Town Sewer line. Permission was granted along with a promise by Board members to stop in and partake of their coffee and whatever. A plea was made to residents to patronize the Putnam café, Simply Bagels, and the other local stores.

The Town Board agreed to permit Roaring Brook Lake community to lower the Lake by seven feet this year to allow for weed eradication and dock repairs. Supervisor Davis thanked the Roaring Brook Lake residents for their civilized and polite behavior in presenting arguments for and against this seven-foot lowering of the lake.
